ANN DUMALIANG
Ann Adeline G. Dumaliang embodies the quintessential spirit of a young Filipino leader driven by an unwavering commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development. As the co-founder and managing trustee of Masungi Georeserve, a conservation area nestled in the lush rainforests of Rizal province, Ann has transformed a once-barren landscape into a thriving sanctuary for biodiversity.
Ann's journey with Masungi began in her childhood, as she witnessed her father's efforts to restore and reforest the area. Fueled by a deep love for nature and a keen awareness of the threats facing the Philippines' diminishing forests, Ann made strategic choices in her education and early career to equip herself with the skills needed to establish Masungi Georeserve. Just two years after graduating with a degree in Management from Ateneo de Manila University, Ann founded the Masungi Georeserve Foundation in 2015.
Through her visionary leadership, Ann has developed an innovative model that combines geotourism, conservation, education, and community engagement. Masungi's low-impact eco-tourism experiences generate sustainable revenue to support its conservation work, while its educational programs cultivate a love for nature among visitors and local communities. Ann's entrepreneurial spirit shines through in her creative approach, using art installations and immersive experiences to engage and inspire.
Despite facing immense challenges, including illegal logging and quarrying, Ann remains steadfast in her mission. Her courage and determination have mobilized support from diverse sectors, including over 200 corporate partners, 40 academic institutions, and 30 research and NGO collaborators. Ann's advocacy efforts have led to legislative inquiries, cease and desist orders, and a landmark partnership with the Philippine military for conservation enforcement.
Ann's work's impact extends far beyond Masungi Georeserve's boundaries. The project has planted over 68,000 native trees, engaged 100 park rangers, and supported more than 200 households. By protecting the watershed, Masungi ensures a stable water supply for millions of people in surrounding areas. Ann's leadership has transformed Masungi into a model for effective protected area management, showcasing how conservation can drive sustainable rural development.
Ann's contributions have earned her global recognition as a National Geographic Explorer, Ashoka Fellow, World Economic Forum Global Shaper, and Davos50 awardee. Her work exemplifies how the passion and innovation of young Filipinos can catalyze transformative change for the environment and communities.
Through her unwavering dedication, Ann Adeline G. Dumaliang has ignited a conservation movement that engages citizens from all walks of life in protecting the Philippines' precious natural heritage. Her story reminds us that the power to build a sustainable future lies in courageous youth leaders who dare to dream and act for the greater good.
